Ode to Hannah C. (Grifos - 1; Council Rock - 0)
September’s end in year two-oh-oh-seven
The day delivered as a gift from the heavens
Clear blue skies, warmth, and no hint of a rain
Greeted all fans of the beautiful game.
Today was to see the Grifos young lot
Matched with a u14 team from the club Council Rock
At the formidable field of Banko they met
For a clash replete with drama and sweat
From the opening whistle the fans realized
That the Grifos had come with an eye on the prize
A first-minute assault down the flank by Miss Stack
Resulted in an early attack
The brilliant cross that was destined to fall
At a Grifo on open net, foot on the ball
Alas, pre-game nerves had yet time to retreat
As the shot flew quite high to an upper-tiered seat.
No worries, the Grifos were clearly undaunted
(Though fans were quite vocal in their disappointment)
The white-shirted team kept true their resolve
To keep up their work rate throughout both of the halves
The level of play inspired not that much awe
But the job did get done, we had more control of the ball
Yet it seemed not to matter since most of action
Led to shots that were wide, high, or at keeper’s midsection
Excitement kept building with each promising run
But the fans found poor finishing not too much fun
The oh’s of the crowd echoed wide o’er the turf
Another shot wasted - we’ve had nearly enough!
Then with edge-o’-the-seat drama filling the air
Our forward broke free from a tired blue-jerseyed player
So, in the game’s waning moments this Grifo had not
Repeated the opening minute’s careless poor shot
With seconds to spare and a shot we should toast
Hannah did score, drove the ball to far post
And in a twist of irony (yes, it’s quite lame)
Coffin thus drove the final nail in the game
